Some updates (Aug 21, 2022)
If you think that what I said in the video above is still limited to the interaction between the audience and the video itself, then an example I will introduce to you is the interaction between the audience and the content itself.
This content creator has created a game that allows viewers to control through the danmu. A simple racing game, the audience can control the direction of the car by sending one of the letters in WASD to danmu while watching the video.
In the video, the creator mentions that he was inspired by a group ping-pong experiment by a computer scientist named Loren Carpenter at Siggraph in 1991. He also decided to make a game that could be participated in by groups of people at the same time. Because it was to participate in the live conference of Bilibili at that time, in line with the Bilibili website’s feature – danmu, he used a previous archived racing game, added the code to capture the keywords (WASD) from the danmu, successfully realized a live game participated by over 5,000 people online controlling a car. Later he explored more complicated game than just car racing.
In the second game, of course he upgraded the level of difficulty and added in more control instructions other than just WASD. Players (about 10,000) could switch their characters in the game and attack. What blew my mind was that he was able to give the audience/players different tasks at some point during the game. So that different players will have different tasks to do. He set a couple of 10-minute tasks, other than the pre-mature exploration at the base for the first couple of minutes, the audience managed to finished all the tasks within 5 minutes with about 5 to 10 seconds of delay the whole time.
He tried to duplicate the game in a live-streaming setting (with the same amount of delay) like the audience, however, he found out that he couldn’t finish the game as quickly as the audience.
He concluded that through his games, the audience showed the evidence of swarm intelligence. Just like the first game, people spent a couple minutes trying to figure out where they were and where to go. After hitting the wall a couple of times, they eventually figure it out and were able to finish the game successfully.
From an educator’s point of view, this further and deepen my idea of how could we utilize this technology in our future education. Imagine that this level of communication and interaction can happen without the teacher actually being around, eliminating the fear of being wrong or embarrassment. Also, imagine the students can choose their own tasks or a group of students doing the same task and learn how to cooperate and collaborate along the way. Though this approach doesn’t seem practical now due to the complexity of coding, which is not for every teacher. However, these 2 experiments have shown us the potential of this technology.
